Who Are You?

As I considered this week’s suggested practice, I came across one of my favorite quotes from poet and naturalist, Diane Ackerman. It is a lyrical consideration of the multiple aspects of the self:

dragonfly

“Who would deduce the dragonfly from the larva, the iris from the bud, the lawyer from the infant? …We are all shape-shifters and magical reinventors. Life is really a plural noun, a caravan of selves.”

As I reflect on this quote, I imagine all of the potential roles we might play in life: child, parent, friend, co-worker, mentor, etc. What might we find beyond these defining perspectives? Is there an essential, core being that transcends all of these roles?

Suggested practice this week:  Who are you, beyond the story?

– Arriving in the moment, connect with the breath

– Notice the movement of the breath throughout the body and the sensations that arise

– Bringing the breath deep within the body, grounded and centered through the hips and legs, notice where the feet meet the floor

– Saying yes to whatever sensations arise without judgment, notice what is there for you right now

What would it be like to simply be a body breathing?

What would it be like to allow yourself to simply be a body breathing, without a story?

As you play with this practice, is it possible to allow yourself the gift of feeling a greater sense of freedom? Notice whatever arises, perhaps with a sense of wonder and discovery. Are you surprised?

Have a great week!!
